[Gabbin' with Gamers] Retro Game Collector Sweden

11.14.17

Gabbin’ with Gamers is proud to introduce Robin, a.k.a. Retro Game Collector Sweden, from Instagram. So without further ado, let’s learn more about this collector!

Rob, thank you for giving us this interview. I came upon your Instagram page and I see that you're a big collector. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hey guys, my name is Robin and I’m a 31 year old retro game collector from Sweden! I live in a house on the countryside with my wife and 4 year old daughter, Ofelia. Apart from my normal job, I do a lot of buying and selling old video games, as well as travel to different retro exhibitions as a seller J.

Can you tell us about how you got into gaming and collecting?
Gaming was a big part of my childhood and every birthday &Christmas, me and my brother always wished for the newest games! We got the NES back in ‘86 and from there it went on to Game Boy, SNES, Sega Mega drive, Game boy Advance, Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64.

What was the first console and game that you owned?
The first console we got was an NES, with about 20 games about 3 months after the release! The first game I remember playing was Balloon Fight, still to this day one of my favorite games for the system!

Balloon Fight...a classic!

Do you have any fond childhood memories based around gaming?
I have a lot of fond memories, playing with friends and talking about secrets, tricks at school, beating hard bosses, etc. However, my best memories were playing with my 3 year older brother. I remember thinking he was invincible; he knew every trick, he never got lost in The Legend of Zelda, and he could pick up a new game and immediately figure out what to do!

Were any of your family members enthusiastic about gaming?
My parents were pretty into gaming back then and could stay up all night playing Bubble Bobble or Super Mario Bros. on the NES! I guess my interest in video games could not be avoided J.

Let's jump forward a bit. Here's one to get you thinking. If you weren't collecting games, what would be your hobby?
I would probably collect Whiskey or old toys from my childhood (He-Man!!).

As you're aware, technology continues to advance the gaming industry. Have you been a fan of these changes?
If it´s about the graphics, I’m not a big fan. I prefer pixel perfection over 3D any day of the week.

Where do you think technology will bring us in the future?
I think we will see a lot more VR in terms of "VR with friends" (a la multiplayer), and augmented reality like Pokémon GO. I also think and HOPE that we will see a lot more Indie studios, and preferably a lot more games with the retro look and feel to it!

We at The Switch Effect are obviously big fans of Nintendo's new console. What are your impressions of the Switch?
It’s a solid, well made console with great controls and great feel to it. The only thing it really lacks is enough really good games.

Which new games are you looking forward to the most?
For the Switch, it would be Rocket League and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild expansions!

We came across your Instagram account and loved seeing your collections. What interested you in starting a social media account?
Thanks a bunch! My main reason for starting the Instagram account was for insurance purposes. It was a good way of keeping track of my collection, as well as share it with my fellow co-collectors! What surprised me was the amount of nostalgic people who just want to drop by to say hello or tell me that they love that game or tell a cool memory from their childhood. Video games really connect people all over the world - pretty amazing stuff J.

That's a nice set of cushions you got there!

What is the best way for our readers/followers to keep up with you?
Join me on instagram @RetroGameCollectorSweden and say hello J.

Last question now that I've run you through the gauntlet. Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Thank you for the interview guys! The best game of all times is probably Earthbound on the SNES, tightly followed by Final Fantasy III (VI) and Chrono Trigger J. Haters gonna hate. Peace out Game On!

Thank you again for taking the time to speak with The Switch Effect and for our readers to learn more about your gaming passion.

[Industry Interviews] Niels 't Hooft from Two Tribes

Joining The Switch Effect for today’s Industry Interview is Two Tribes’ Niels ‘t Hooft, hybrid and marketer for the hit shooter/plaftormer title, RIVE. Two Tribes, the Amersfoort-based indie developer, was formed in 2000. Their first title, Toki Tori for the Game Boy Color, was the start of a 17-year journey in the gaming industry. Over the years, Two Tribes has developed games for the iOS, PC, Wii, Wii U, PS4, and now the Nintendo Switch. With RIVE: Ultimate Edition blasting its way to the Nintendo Switch on November 17th and the company’s final title, we thought now was the perfect time to learn more about Two Tribes. So without further ado, here’s Niels.

Niels, thank you for speaking with us. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Well, I’m a writer who’s always been very interested in videogames. I haven’t looked back since I saw Super Mario Bros. for the 8-bit NES at a friend’s party when I was eleven or twelve. Actually I can’t remember much of my life before that! I started a Zelda website called ZHQ.com when I was 15, which some people still remember. In my adult life I wrote some novels, did a lot of games journalism, and have been working with Two Tribes since translating the first Toki Tori from English to our native language Dutch. Which is about a decade ago.

Can you tell us about how you got into the gaming industry?
Here's a funny story. My first interview with a REAL game developer was with two guys called Martijn and Collin, who had just founded Two Tribes. I was pretty nervous, but it turned out to be a great conversation. We had a lot of the same ideas about games. Years later they told me they were very nervous too, because they were going to do their very first interview with a REAL games journalist! Anyway, as I wrote more about games, I got interested in working on the development side as well, and Two Tribes was nice enough to ask me to create a ‘story without words’ for Toki Tori 2, and then when that worked out quite well, to create an ‘optional storyline' for RIVE.

How did Two Tribes come to be?
The company has it beginnings in a puzzle game for the MSX called Eggbert, made by our co-founder Collin when he was a teenager. A few years later he decided to turn it into a Game Boy Color game, together with Martijn. The game was picked up to be published by Capcom, and the name was changed into Toki Tori. It came out a day after 9/11, bizarrely. The company went through many phases after that, making dozens of games for equally as many platforms, with quite a bunch of employees who are now almost all at other Dutch studios. Currently we’ve taken a very lean shape, with a virtual office and only the co-founders, a few partners, and me working on things.

For those who have yet to play RIVE, can you provide some background as to what type of game they can expect to experience?
We have a few different ways of describing RIVE:

1.      It’s a metal wrecking, robot hacking shooter
2.      It’s a hard, fast & hilarious action game with insanely spectacular battles
3.      It’s a modern ode to classic shooters

We tried to make something that FEELS like the games we grew up with in the eighties and nineties, that’s actually much better in practice.

Personally, I took a lot of care adding two memorable characters, funny dialog and a quirky story to the mix. So that’s where space scavenger Roughshot comes in, who thinks he enters a deserted starship looking for loot, but then meets the passive-aggressive robot butler DLL. In the end, it’s a buddy story as they have to escape together.

So. Much. Destruction!

As stated in previous announcements, RIVE: Ultimate Edition will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. Can you share with us the additions to the game not previously available in the original release?
The short version is that the Ultimate Edition is the best version of RIVE ever, and it's only available on Nintendo Switch! Here’s a quick rundown of what we changed or added:

1.      Copilot Mode, a new addition that lets you play the game with a friend, controlling the spider tank with two Joy-Cons.
2.      HD Rumble support, letting you truly feel the action
3.      In-game achievements on Switch, with some new ones added in: 48 and counting;
4.      We went back into the game to tweak it, both tech and content wise. So it loads faster & plays smoother. It’s polished to perfection!

What was the process like for creating a game for the Nintendo Switch?
RIVE was built on top of the custom game engine we created for Toki Tori 2, so it took some time to get it up and running on Switch. But ultimately we were able to create the fastest, smoothest version of the game so far. It runs deliciously! We originally wanted to release RIVE on Wii U, which didn’t work out for both technical and commercial reasons, so we’re obviously super happy that we’re finally able to bring RIVE to a Nintendo console. Especially in such an awesome version.

As you're aware, technology continues to advance the gaming industry. Have you been a fan of these changes? Where do you think technology will bring us in the future?
It feels to me like it has less of an impact these days. I haven’t been as excited about a console in years as I'm with the Switch, which is less powerful than the latest PlayStation and Xbox iterations. However, I don’t notice any of this when playing Super Mario Odyssey or Axiom Verge. Also, my new iPhone is extremely powerful, but I haven’t really found any guilty-pleasure type time-wasting games that have really hooked me. VR and AR don’t seem to take off as quickly as some had expected, and I’m not hearing any talk about must-play games on these platforms. I guess it’s really about the games now. But hasn’t it always been that way?

Double Kill points!

We at The Switch Effect are obviously big fans of Nintendo's new console. What are your impressions of the Switch?
We love that Nintendo really made the concept of a hybrid console work. It’s great as a handheld, great as a TV console, and switching between these modes is super smooth. It also helps that the suspend feature works without a hitch. In my experience, this makes it so much easier to play a game for a bit, and pick it up again later. You just don’t have to worry about the console booting, or your game loading.

Which new games are you looking forward to the most (besides yours of course, haha)?
I was really looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy, and am loving every second of it. I can’t wait to see what projects Nintendo’s internal studios tackle next. If Zelda and Mario are any indication, it’ll be amazing. I also can’t wait to see what indie developers will come up with. I’ve been having a lot of fun with metroidvanias like Steamworld Dig 2 and Axiom Verge recently, and would love to see more like that on the platform.

Sadly, it was announced that RIVE: Ultimate Edition would be the last title produced by Two Tribes. What’s next for you and the other members of Two Tribes?
Indeed, even before finishing the initial PS4/Steam version of RIVE, we announced that we wouldn’t start any new projects after RIVE. But we also said immediately that we'd keep supporting our existing games and our existing fans! RIVE: Ultimate Edition for Switch is the result of that strategy, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we decided to bring more of our existing games to new platforms.

As said before, we do this with a very lean setup with just a few people and partners. Our co-founder Collin is actually traveling the world (and has been for over a year), Martijn is working out of his home, and so am I. We meet up for coffee and bagels regularly, though! Everyone is planning to eventually move onto other companies or projects, but we’re not in a hurry.

Last question now that I've run you through the gauntlet. Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I just hope everyone will check out RIVE: Ultimate Edition and enjoy themselves J.

Thank you again for taking the time to speak with The Switch Effect and for our readers to learn more about yourself, Two Tribes, and RIVE: Ultimate Edition.

RIVE: Ultimate Edition releases on the Nintendo Switch eShop on November 17, 2017.

[Gabbin' with Gamers] Console Wars

Today on Gabbin’ with Gamers, we have a VERY special guest. You might know him as the Sega guy from the hit YouTube channel, Console Wars, but to others he is simply known as Dan. Console Wars is the highly popular and extremely entertaining YouTube Channel that compares games that came out for both the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. In fact, before you even get to this review, go watch Console Wars! Then come back…please.

So let’s begin. Dan, thank you so much for speaking with us. Even though The Switch Effect is slightly biased toward Nintendo, we know you represent Sega and let’s be honest, Sega is as much of our childhood as Nintendo. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m one of the co-stars of the Console Wars series on YouTube. It’s a series where my buddy Greg and I play rivals who compare Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games. Greg plays the Nintendo guy and I play the Sega guy. We compare games and throw in some humor too. I also do the writing, editing, and make the music as well.

Can you tell us about how you got into gaming and what the first console/game you ever owned was?
My first console was an NES. It came with the Super Mario/Duck Hunt combo. I still remember putting the game in backwards the first time. I also used to move the controller up whenever I jumped in the game. Eventually, I got both the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. There was no war for me since I had everything. Perks of being an only child, lol.

So, Console Wars. We at The Switch Effect are huge fans and I was even lucky enough to meet you at A Video Game Con this past September in NJ. Could you share with us how Console Wars came to be?
I was a big AVGN fan (still am). I thought it would be cool to do something like that. I think the exact moment I came up with the idea was when I was looking up music for Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. I played the SNES version growing up and when I looked up the music I came across the Genesis soundtrack. I couldn’t believe how different it sounded. I thought that someone has to make a comparison video about this. Then I thought I should just do it.

I eventually asked Greg to help, but just to capture game footage. I was going to do the show solo, like the Nerd. But after I left his house I realized a 2-person show would be more interesting. It could reignite the rivalry of the 90’s. People could pick sides. So after I left Greg’s house, I e-mailed him my idea for a 2-man show and Console Wars was born.

With your first comparison video being Aladdin over five years ago, did you ever expect to be the sensation you are today?
I wouldn’t call us a sensation, lol. I just hoped people would like it. It took us a year and a half to get 50 subscribers so it was a slow burn for us. I’m happy to see the channel grow as much as it has.

Where do you see the channel growing into and what can fans look forward to in the future?
I’d like to branch out more. We want to start comparing Nintendo and Sega Master System games soon. I also want to do a smaller series where we compare Genesis vs Sega Cd, Retro game vs Remakes, and Gameboy vs Game Gear. Just need to find the time.

These last few questions are to dive a little deeper into your own personal thoughts. As you're aware, technology continues to advance the gaming industry. Have you been a fan of these changes?
I have some gripes with these some things. One thing I don’t like is DLC. Once you buy a game you don’t own everything anymore. There’s always more stuff to buy. I get if you like a game and want more, but they should just make another game. I also don’t like everything going digital. I like my physical copies of my games. I get digital is that future like it was for music and movies. That’s just me being a grumpy old man.

We feel you!
I do like VR. I tried it a few times and think it’s headed in the right direction. It’ll be cool to see how immersive it becomes over the next 10 years.

Where do you think technology will bring us in the future?
Everything will be drilled into our brains. No more physical media. It’s all downloaded to a chip to our brains. That’s what I get for listening to too much Joe Rogan, lol.

What are your impressions of the Switch?
It seems cool. I don’t own one, but I’ve briefly played it. Having that much power on the go or at home is def a step in the right direction. Greg has one and likes it, but his is starting to curve. So I’m a little hesitant to get one. Maybe once the curving stops happening.

Which new games are you looking forward to the most?
I’m really behind on new games.  I want to play the new South Park game. I also haven’t play Ys VIII yet and Dynasty Warriors 9. I’ve been a fan of the Chinese Han Dynasty history since I was first introduced to it on the NES in Destiny of an Emperor.

What is the best way for our readers/followers to keep up with you?
Following us on YouTube. We also have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram too.

I can see I’ve run you through the gauntlet so I’ll end with this last question: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
If anyone else out there wants to start a YouTube channel, but isn’t sure, just do it. You really have nothing to lose. I had no experience with video, editing, script writing, “acting,” game capturing…anything. I just made it up as I went along and somehow people liked it. If I can do it, anyone can. And don’t let negative feedback get you down. It’s the internet, you can’t avoid that.

Dan, thank you again for taking the time to speak with us and we look forward to more installments of Console Wars as well as what is to come in 2018. THIS IS CONSOLE WARS!!!

[Gabbin' with Gamers] That Nerd Violet

Today on Gabbin' with Gamers, Violet (a.k.a. That Nerd Violet) joins us to share her background in gaming. After coming across your Instagram and Twitch account, we at The Switch Effect thought you would be the perfect gamer to speak with!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi, folks! My name is Violet and I was born and raised in Boston, MA. I’m a life-long gamer, pizza enthusiast, and gravitationally challenged.

Can you tell us about how you got into gaming and collecting?
I’ve been playing video games ever since I can remember, thanks to my cousins and early childhood friends. As a 90’s kid, I didn’t know anyone who didn’t own a console (Nintendo) so I became familiar with the games quickly until my parents surprised me with my own on Christmas morning.
That Nerd Violet knows how to mix gaming with humor

What was the first console and game that you owned? My first ever console was a Super Nintendo. I remember waking up on Christmas and opening up my gift--I couldn’t believe it! It came bundled with Donkey Kong Country and that’s all I played for weeks until my father took me to Blockbuster to rent some more games.
Do you have any fond childhood memories based around gaming?
Most of my childhood memories revolve around gaming. Whether it was playing with my next-door neighbor, school friends, older cousins--we played as much as we could! We had such fun times together and many bellyaches from laughing so much.

Were any of your family members enthusiastic about gaming?
Definitely my cousins, but not my parents. I think at some point they believed I’d “grow out” of games, but that never happened. They eventually came around and we did end up playing the original Wii games together often.

Let's jump forward a bit. Here's one to get you thinking. If you weren't collecting games, what would be your hobby?
I’m still a nerd at heart, so I would have to say collecting leather-bound books. I have started a small collection but I focus more on games and only treat myself to books every so often. I think books and video games are similar in that they let you escape from the real world and live someone else’s life with different choices than your own. Both are extremely healthy outlets for the mind and body.

As you're aware, technology continues to advance the gaming industry. Have you been a fan of these changes?
There are pros and cons as the industry continues to evolve. I’ve been very much enjoying how indie developers have been able to get crowd funding in order to create games consumers want to play. Alternatively, I think there has been a huge increase with games having paid DLC content and/or games with many micro transactions.

Where do you think technology will bring us in the future?
I’m worried that the future of the industry will only be dollar signs and not player experience. Outside of that fear, I believe we will see cellphone gaming rise more than ever before, with consoles turning towards VR.

We at The Switch Effect are obviously big fans of Nintendo's new console. What are your impressions of the Switch?
While I don’t have one of my own (the first Nintendo console I haven’t bought), I have loved gaming on it at various friend’s houses. I really think it was a new frontier to melt a regular console with a handheld and now the players can do both with one system. My one gripe with it (and what I was upset about with the Wii U) is the lack of currently available games to justify the hefty price tag. I love Mario and Zelda as much as the next Nintendo fanatic, but I cannot personally afford to buy an expensive system just for two games.

Which new games are you looking forward to the most?
For the Switch, I’m excited to try a demo of Super Mario Odyssey. In terms of other games, I cannot wait to play The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs, Hello Neighbor, and the long-awaited We Happy Few.

We came across your Instagram and Twitch account and really enjoyed your pictures/videos. What interested you in starting a social media account and especially a Twitch account?
I knew I wanted to get into streaming on Twitch so creating a social media presence was very important to me in order to connect with other streamers, build a community, and interact with other people who all love games!

What would you say makes your videos unique and different from others?
My streams are based around humor, viewer engagement, and community. I make sure all of my viewers are involved with my stream in all aspects and treat them as family--not numbers.

There's no better feeling that feeling engaged with your fan!

What is the best way for our readers/followers to keep up with you?
Any of my social media accounts!

Last question now that I've run you through the gauntlet. Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I’ve met wonderful friends so far in my streaming journey and I’m so grateful to connect with other like-minded individuals. Growing up, gaming wasn’t cool. Within the past few years, more people have turned to games as their escape.  There’s so many different types of people in the community now that you wouldn’t have seen even ten years ago. I’ve loved seeing everything evolve, from the player base to the technology. Thanks for taking the time to interview me!

Thank you again for taking the time to speak with The Switch Effect and for our readers to learn more about your gaming passion.

[Gabbin' with Gamers] phills_lifestyle

Interviewed on 11.08.2017

Today on Gabbin’ with Gamers, The Switch Effect speaks with Phillip (a.k.a. phills_lifestyle). Phillip is on Instagram and YouTube, where he displays his lover and collection of video games and anime. So without further ado, let’s learn about Phillip!

Thank you Phillip for giving us this interview. I came upon your Instagram and YouTube page and I see that you're a lover of games and anime! Can you tell us a little bit about how you got into gaming and collecting?
I got into gaming because of my older cousins and my dad’s friend. Watching them game on their consoles was so intriguing. How I became a collector: I had a bad habit of selling my goods, then after a while I would regret selling my items. Once I stopped selling, a collection started to grow.

What was the first console and game that you owned?
My first console was the Sega Mega Drive and my first game was Sonic the Hedgehog.

Do you have any fond childhood memories based around gaming?
When I first laid eyes on The Legend of Zelda on the Game Boy Color. Link’s Awakening - that’s what really got me into the franchise and how I became a fan.

Such a classic game!

Were any of your family members enthusiastic about gaming?
Yes, some of my cousins , which was good because anytime we got together that’s all we would talk about.

Let's jump forward a bit. Here's one to get you thinking. If you weren't collecting games, what would be your hobby?
I’ll be drawing cartoons/manga characters.

As you're aware, technology continues to advance the gaming industry. Have you been a fan of these changes?
Yes, I’ve been a fan of change because I believe in growth for better or worse. For example, the Nintendo Switch is a prime example of advancement.

Where do you think technology will bring us in the future?
More enhanced graphics and virtual gameplay.

We at The Switch Effect are obviously big fans of Nintendo's new console. What are your impressions of the Switch?
First off, very impressive from the feel of it even down to the weight. It’s a massive game changer down to the Joy cons where you’ve got instant 2 player mode. My favorite part is playing my favorite franchises in handheld mode. I am incredibly excited to see what else the system has to offer.

Which new games are you looking forward to the most?
I’m looking forward to Super Mario Odyssey, Pokémon, and Dragon Quest Builders.

We came across your Instagram and YouTube account and loved seeing your collections. What interested you in starting social media accounts?
Personally, I enjoy taking photos and sharing them on social media. What interested me was the community and content on YouTube and on Instagram was that you instantly have something in common with the people you choose to follow.

Phillip's Instagram is always this fun!

What is the best way for our readers to keep up with you?
Instagram @phills_lifestyle or YouTube Phillslifestyle. See the links below.

Last question now that we’ve run you through the gauntlet. Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Just keep the violence and killing in the games and we all should just keep gaming on and keeping on loving.

Thank you again for allowing our readers to learn more about a fellow gamer and collector! We look forward to your future postings.

[Gabbin' with Gamers] RGT 85

by Jonathan Polan | 11.06.2017

YouTube sensation, Shawn of RGT 85 fame, joins The Switch Effect on the latest Gabbin' with Gamers. Before we get to the interview, The Switch Effect just wanted to say we are huge fans of your channel and congratulations on reaching nearly 60,000 subscribers. Your rants, hidden gems, and other videos are always entertaining and binge worthy. We are honored to allow our readers a peek behind the curtain and to learn more about you!

So let's start at the beginning. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Of course! So I'm Shawn, 32 (hence the 85), and currently reside in North Carolina (but am possibly changing that early in 2018.) I’ve been gaming since I could hold the controller in my hand and never really looked back. It's always been something I've enjoyed doing and have had fun doing.

Can you tell us about how you got into gaming and collecting?

My uncle was a huge part of that. He had an NES with Super Mario Bros., Tecmo Bowl, and a couple other games and when I was really young I'd go over there and play them for hours. Then, he got a Genesis and I got the NES as a hand-me-down for Christmas one year and that pretty much started the gaming madness.

As far as collecting, I just started enjoying keeping everything. I've had to sell stuff over the years but lately I've managed to keep everything and continue to grow it which is good. I guess it kind of plays into an addictive personality, haha.

What was the first console and game that you owned?

The hand-me-down NES and the games my Uncle had was technically the first, but the first new console I got was a Genesis Model 2 with Sonic 2 bundle for Christmas 1993.

Do you have any fond childhood memories based around gaming?
Oh for sure. My Uncle and I would always stay up mad late playing games on the Genesis like NHLPA 93 and World Series Baseball doing the home run derby. I remember he got an N64 with Super Mario 64 and that just blew my mind. I'd play games with my dad too, but he always said I was cheating because he was super competitive like me. I remember even my Grandpa played Greatest Heavyweights on the Genesis because he loves old-school boxing and he loved the fighters in the game.

Let's jump forward a bit. Here's one to get you thinking. If you weren't collecting games, what would be your hobby?
Well, to be perfectly honest, if it wasn't for video games I'd be dead or in jail. That's real talk. I made a video about it on the channel last year. When I was in High School I started hanging with the "wrong crowd" or whatever and was doing a lot of drugs. We had a snow storm and I couldn't go anywhere so I took the PS2 out and played Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for the first time. I got sucked into it. The story was just so crazy and mind-opening that I wanted more. So I got heavy into that series and found my way back to gaming. A lot of those people from that period of my life are no longer with us, in jail, or just in a bad place in life. So I probably would have ended up like that honestly.

As you're aware, technology continues to advance the gaming industry. Have you been a fan of these changes?
Some of it I like, some of it I don't. Obviously the more powerful systems allow for more creativity and graphics in games, which is great. Things like the Nintendo Switch are breaking down the conventional barriers of gaming and what a home console or portable console can actually do.

As far as the negatives, I'm not a fan of "online only" games because they essentially date themselves (look at MAG on the PS3 for instance, now it's a coaster.) Loot boxes, massive patches, all that stuff is annoying as well. I also think VR is overrated and will never be a mainstay or replacement for gaming the traditional way.

Where do you think technology will bring us in the future?
It's interesting because we are starting to get to a point where the graphics are so good they can't really get much better. Things like VR and AR are interesting, but I don't think they will ever be mainstream. Motion controls came and went as well. I honestly think as far as technology goes, it will be ways to break the mold, sort of like the Switch is doing.

We at The Switch Effect are obviously big fans of Nintendo's new console. What are your impressions of the Switch?
I love it. It's an amazing platform, the library so far has been insane, and it's become my platform of choice. Playing on the PS4 or Xbox One is fun still of course, but I hate being tied down to my TV with those. The Switch is just so much more versatile.

Which new games are you looking forward to the most?
Honestly, November is insane when it comes to games. I've got Sonic Forces ordered to review it but I don't expect it to be great or anything. DOOM on the other hand? I am so stoked for that. I played it on the PS4 and loved it, and I want to revisit it on the Switch. Skyrim is another game on the radar, and I really like the Resident Evil Revelations Collection as well. Then Xenoblade in December, plus tons of indies. So there's lots of money that will be going towards the Switch.

Now let's talk about your YouTube channel. As mentioned earlier, we are HUGE fans of your work. How did you get started making videos?
It's a weird story honestly. I was (and still am) working for Nintendo Enthusiast and I noticed they had a YouTube channel with 400 subs and I was like "Wow that's a lot I want to make videos." So I asked if I could and they were like, have you ever made a video? I hadn't but they were like try it anyways. So Jason Lepine and I sort of built up that channel and it was fun, but everyone had side projects. So I started RGT 85 as a side project, and then it turned into a beast of its own.

Congratulations on just passing 59,000 subscribers on YouTube. That is no easy feat, but very well deserved. Did you ever expect to become as huge as you have been and what do you want to say to all your fans?
Not at all honestly. I just wanted to make some retro and SEGA videos and not be only able to talk about Nintendo stuff like on Nintendo Enthusiast, and it just took off. It's been absolutely insane, and I appreciate anyone who has ever watched a video and left a comment or subscribed. It's all pretty intense.

As 2017 starts to draw to a close, what can everyone expect from RGT 85 in the coming year?
Honestly, 2018 is going to be insane for me. I can't really say too much right now, but there are some BIG changes coming in 2018 for myself personally and the channel that will benefit both in a big way. So keep your eyes peeled :)

Last question now that I've run you through the gauntlet. Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Thanks for interviewing me! And thank you to everyone reading this and all those who support the channel. You guys rock!

Thank you again for taking the time to speak with The Switch Effect and for our readers to learn more about your gaming passion. We look forward to your future videos!
